Is MSU For Real?

Over the past several weeks I have been bombarded with comments from Michigan State students, alumni, and fans telling me about the strength of their team and their ability to crush Michigan again this year.

However, after watching the first 6 weeks of the season, I have been far less confident in Michigan State's ability to finish at the top of the Big Ten again this year. So, is Michigan State for real or are they closer to what Michigan was last season? Hot early, but likely to end the season as an average or above-average Big Ten team.

Here's What We Know About Michigan State:
  • Finished 11-2 Last Season (Lost @ Iowa and to Alabama in a bowl)
  • 13 Returning Starters From 2010 (8th in the Big Ten)
  • 4-1 in 2011 (Loss @ Notre Dame)
  • Ranked #23 in the AP Poll and #19 in the Coaches Poll
  • Ranked #1 in Total Defense (173.4 yds/g)
  • Ranked #3 in Rush Defense (64 yds/g)
  • Ranked #64 in Total Offense (398 yds/g)
  • Ranked #95 in 3rd down conversions (35.21%)
Well, from that limited info, one might believe this should be one of the best teams in the league. They only lost 1 game, had more than half their starters return from an 11 win team, and have one of the best defenses in the nation.

However, this assumption would not be completely accurate. Undoubtedly, Michigan State's defense is solid, a team isn't placed into the top 5 without at least a decent defense, but you can't help but notice the weakness of some of the teams they've faced. For instance, here are the offensive stats for Michigan State's opponents:

Total Offense Stats:

Youngstown State - FCS (hard to compare stats, but had 254 yds against MSU)
Florida Atlantic - 119th (230 yds/g)
Notre Dame - 20th (467.5yds/g)
Central Michigan - 88th (350.5 yds/g)
Ohio State - 105th (315.3 yds/g)

So, what does this tell us? Excluding Youngstown State, which can't really be compared seeing as they are an FCS team, MSU has faced one top 50 offense this year. Michigan has already faced two at this point (Western Michigan and Notre Dame) and another two in the top 70 (San Diego State and Northwestern).

Since it is unlikely many people have found Michigan's schedule brutal this year, you cannot help but question those defensive stats. There is no doubt Michigan State's defense is solid, but I would be hesitant to put it in the elite stats. They do typically hold their opponents to much fewer yards than they average, which is the typical sign of a good defense, but when 60% of your opponents are MAC level or below, a Big Ten team should be able to hold the defense to below its average yards per game.

Although the defensive stats may be skewed for Michigan State, the offensive stats illustrate some of the early season troubles. Michigan State has essentially been unable to run the ball behind its young line, Kirk Cousins has made many mistakes, and they have frankly struggled moving the ball. Here's a comparison

MSU Offensive Stats - 2011 - 2010:

Total Offense +9.5 yds/g
Passing Offense +32.8 yds/g
Rushing Offense -23.7 yds/g
Scoring Offense -1.5 pts/g

So, what can we see from this? Michigan State is actually moving the ball more than last year, but only by 9.5 yds/g. Along with this, they are being forced to pass the ball more (likely due to their weak offensive line) and are scoring less even though they are moving the ball further. At first glance, this doesn't seem significant. The difference of gaining 9.5 yds/g more and scoring 1.5 pts/g fewer isn't all that important.

However, let's take a look back at the schedule. The stats from 2010 cover the ENTIRE season. This means they include Michigan State's games against 6 teams in the Top 51 defenses of 2010 (Alabama, Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, Illinois, and Notre Dame). As of now, Michigan State has faced 2 defenses in the Top 51 (Ohio State #22 and Notre Dame #51).

Obviously, if a team faces tougher defenses, their stats are going to go down. Along with this, even the 2 defenses they have faced this season are in the middle or rear of the top 51 (Alabama, Wisconsin, and Iowa were all in the top 25 in 2010). Essentially, what this means is that not only are Michigan State's defensive stats boosted, their offensive stats (roughly equivalent to last season) are boosted as well.

Now, I don't expect Michigan State to lose the remainder of its games and miss a bowl, but I do not expect them to even come close to 11-2 or winning the Big Ten. They may be able to sneak past Michigan and Nebraska for the Legends Division, but I don't see them having any chance against Wisconsin (assuming they win the Leaders).

So, is Michigan State For Real?

I say not quite. They are an above average Big Ten team, but not championship or BCS-caliber.

Also, an MSU joke:

Did you hear they're going to start calling Spartan Stadium, "The Shed"?
Yeah, because every Big House has a shed behind it...

Allen Gant 2012 Michigan commit exclusive coverage 9/9/11 Sylvania Southview vs Toledo Start

Game of the week

On Friday Sept 9th 2011 the staff of Everything Michigan and More traveled to Toledo Start to get exclusive footage of 2012 Michigan commit Allen Gant. After a very long fought game the undefeated Southview Cougars came up short and was upset by the Toledo Spartans 28-22.

After speaking with Allen's father at half time I was informed that Allen suffered from a hip pointer! In Mr. Gant's opinion Allen should not have played. Playing through injury seems to be a great quality that Allen has and I am sure that will carry with him to the next level at Michigan. I am hoping that Allen can get back to 100% this week so he can help the Cougars get back to there winning ways. Even though Sylvania lost a very close game to the Spartans of Toledo there were many positives to take away from this game. Senior Rylee Neill #33 was flying around the field once again and made several tackles and an interception. I was also very impressed with the play of #47 Jay Fisher. Jay had a solid game while having tons of support from his friends and family in the stands. It was very hard to keep the camera still sitting close to Jay's fan base!

The upset bid began early as the Spartans' Chris Towns took the opening kickoff and returned it 93 yards for a quick 7-0 lead.
While Southview (2-1) responded with a 3-yard score by Jay Fisher, the Spartans reached the end zone three more times to extend their lead to 28-6.
Chris Jones scored on a 45-yard run and finished with 110 yards rushing. Tyler Ritter added two TDs, connecting with Tyrell Jones on a four-yard pass and tallying on a seven-yard TD.
The Cougars tried to mount a rally as Austin Valdez threw touchdown passes of 22 and 32 yards to J.Q. Bowers, but the Spartans (1-2) were able to hold on for their first win of the season. Please enjoy our exclusive footage and GO BLUE!

      AD Announces College Gameday Location

Well, the announcement everybody's been excited to hear came out today. Though fans and the media knew College Gameday, an ESPN broadcast, would be appearing on Michigan's campus for the game against Notre Dame, commonly referred to as Under the Lights, an exact location had yet to be named.

The official announcement, here, stated that the broadcast will take place on Ingalls Mall on the Central Campus. For those of you unfamiliar with campus, this is located right by the "Diag" which is considered the center of campus. Here's a link to the Google Map location of Ingalls Mall.

The location was recently used by SportsNation when they broadcast from Ann Arbor in the fall of 2010. The site features a scenic view of campus and stables such as Burton Tower (the Bell
Tower), the Michigan League (first woman's dorm on campus), the Graduate Library, Angell Hall, and Rackham.

For those of you planning on attending this broadcast, or simply viewing from home, make sure to check out the scenery (not just the fans haha) because you are sure to get some beautiful views of central campus. Many people often forget about the university's academic and scenic values because of its intense national athletic presence.

      Jeremy Clark Commited to Michigan

Michigan has accepted a grey-shirt commitment from KY S Jeremy Clark. Jeremy has a 2* rating on scout. He's a consensus 6-4 (ESPN says 6-2), with two votes for 205 pounds and two votes for 185 pounds. Jeremy did very well at the Michigan camp so the staff gave him the greyshirt offer. The thing about this is Jeremy will have to pay for his first semester that being said I would say he loves Michigan. Clark has a full ride offer from Illinois but chooses to come and pay to earn a spot at Michigan!  OH S Jarrod Wilson spot may become open if he commits elsewhere. If that happens the greyshirt status may be lifted. Also because Jeremy is greyshirt status this does not effect Michigan's 2012  commit numbers. We are still at 16 commits for 2012.

      Grey-shirting:
While most people are familiar with the phrase "red-shirt" most people have no idea what a grey-shirt is.  In fact, the NCAA does not even acknowledge the term.
      Here is how grey-shirting works:
      1. A player commits to a team that is over-signed.
      2. That player either doesn't go to school in the fall, or enrolls part-time and pays their own way.  They are not officially on the team.
      3. In January of the following year, that player enrolls full-time and officially joins the team.  They are technically part of the recruiting class for the following year.
Grey-shirting is a way for schools to skate around the recruiting rules.  It allows schools to over-sign, regardless of how many prospects they signed the previous year.
Every player has a five year window to play four seasons.  That window starts the second a player is enrolled in college full-time or are on scholarship.  Since the player is not enrolled full time and is not on scholarship, their "NCAA clock" has not started.
Once they join a team, they still have the full five year window and the ability to red-shirt if they so choose.
While grey-shirting, players are not on the team.
They can not practice or condition with the team.  They can not be given any advantage not extended to the normal student body.  Grey-shirts are not allowed at team meetings or functions either.  For all intents they are essentially, regular students.

Chris Wormley and Kyle Kalis set to visit Michigan

      Chris wormley
The recruiting boards are hot right now!! The word is Toledo Whitmer DE Chris Wormley and OSU commit Kyle Kalis are set to visit Michigan this weekend. Wow what a huge surprise! It was reported once all the turmoil at Ohio State occurred Kyle Kalis wanted to decommit but Luke Fickell talked him out of it. Kyle says he wants to check on different options. One being the University of Michigan. We might want to thank Tom Strobel for this visit since he was the one telling Kyle how great Michigan was. And as it turns out Kyle is not only friends with Tom but Chris Wormley too. I 'm thinking all three of these guys would love to play together. If Michigan could some how get these two great players to commit I would have to say it's an early Christmas present for me. I will be watching how this unfolds very carefully and keep everyone updated as soon as new info becomes available.
      Kyle Kalis

Here is the update I have It looks like Stanford will not be coming to Michigan this weekend. This may be good news for everyone. As you may know usually Ohio WR Dwayne Stanford and his teammate Adolphus Washington usually take visits together. It was reported earlier this week that Washington could not make it to Michigan this weekend and Stanford was coming alone. Well now Josh Hemholdt is reporting that Stanford isn't coming to Ann Arbor this weekend. Standford is saying he will still try to make it this month. If that happens there may be a good chance Washington will to. For more on this story you can read at http://michigan.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=338&mid=145207826&sid=883&tid=145207826&style=1

CBS sports and former U-M football coach Rich Rodriguez join forces

Well it Looks like Rich Rod will not be coaching this season instead he will be working with CBS this season. I can't wait to get his input into all the problems at OSU and I'm sure we will get that soon enough. Not much of a chance of him doing the Michigan games But who knows it would make for good ratings. I thought there might be a chance of him returning back to WVU. Looks like that idea is dead. Rodriguez spent three seasons at Michigan before he was dismissed in January. So this might be what he needs to get the blood pumping again. Who knows you might see Rich Rod on the side lines next season......

WR Darryl Stonum In trouble again!.

Breaking news on Thursday!! WR Darryl Stonum was ticketed on Thursday for driving on a suspended license. This two weeks after his DUI.  He will be sentenced on Friday the 10th. Wow!! I don't have much to say here this has took me by surprise. I was hoping Darryl would make some serious changes in his life. Well Hoke has to make a decision here he can not allow his players to get into trouble like this. Unfortunately this may be the end of Darryl's time at Michigan it is ashame that as talented as he his he could not make better choices. I had a poll question up this week!  The question being should Darryl be allowed to play this season?  Up and till now he had the advantage slightly. I think now with the latest developments everyone's minds will change that voted for him to play. I think I was one of the biggest supporter of Stonum but now I have to say Its not worth causing a problem with team chemistry. And I feel that Darryl has left Coach Hoke no choice.

My hopes of Gunner Kiel Commiting to Michigan are fading fast!

      On Wednesday,

Durron Neal, a St. Louis prospect rated among the top 10 high school receivers in the nation, verbally committed to Oklahoma

Neal visited OU in conjunction with the Sooners' annual high school football camp. Among those who have been sighted in Norman include wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, Rivals' No. 1 high school player in the country from Springfield, Mo., and Gunner Kiel, considered by some to be the nation's top high school quarterback from Columbus, Ind.

All things are pointing towards Norman For one of the top QB's in the nation. I'm hoping I will not have to change my top 3 wishlist but it is starting to look real bleak for our chances to land Gunner at this time! As I posted earlier in the week Gunner is to make his decision sometime during the week. With all the new developments I would have to guess that Oklahoma made it clear that Michigan has a nice stable of QB's. His playing time at Oklahoma would more likely happen sooner. Lets face it we have some very nice QB options. Denard,Devin and now Shane Morris and that is a lot of competition. Maybe for Michigan it is better that Gunner don't commit it leaves the spot open for anther position of need. Our 2012 class is filling up fast I think its time to slow down and just figure out what and who we really need. There is no need to have to many commits and later have to decide who to cut. That is no way to do business and not a good way for Hoke and his staff to start things off. Word travels fast we all know about Twitter and what it can do. Time will tell I am not closing the door on Gunner because crazier  things have happened when it comes to recruiting. We will just have to wait and see.

      Pryor Leaving OSU?

Is this the end of Terrelle Pryor at OSU? Is his mentor out of touch with his lawyer? Did anyone really believe he wasn't going to leave after the OSU fans turned on him? The Tressel era is taking a beating. With the promises that the suspended players were going to stay at THEE Ohio State University, another lie is tumbling. Pryors Lawyer says he will be leaving. Pryor leaves most likely to try his hand at the Supplemental NFL draft. This was expected by many people. Stay tuned for further updates.
